Artist Spotlight: Emily Krupp

About Emily

"I am an artist and art educator living in Vancouver, Washington. In my work, I carve low-relief landscapes inspired by my travels and new home in the Pacific Northwest. I have always had an interest in art, but I had my first introduction to ceramics in high school. Then I studied at Virginia Commonwealth University, where I earned my Bachelors degree in Art Education. While I was there, I took a Ceramics 101 course. I was hooked from there! Now, I teach handbuilding and wheel classes at local community studios.

Q: What inspires your work or keeps you excited in the studio?

A: "My artmaking spans a variety of mediums. As well as ceramics, I love painting, drawing and photography. If I’m not in the studio, I love being outdoors. In 2025, I started exploring underglazes more and began creating my low-relief landscapes based on my photography and travels. Each piece is a memory. I couldn’t create my work without having experienced seeing an inspiring landscape."

Q: What is your favorite AMACO product and why?

A: "I love the Semi-Moist Underglaze (SMUG) Palettes! I first discovered them while I was searching for underglazes that would provide the painterly application that I envisioned. These products allow me to control how diluted I want my underglazes to be and build up layers of colors."

Q: Any advice you'd give to someone just starting out with clay?

A: "Surround yourself with a community of ceramicists! It is rejuvenating to talk to and ask questions about clay with people who share your passions and curiosities. Take classes, join a community studio, or see if there is a local potter’s association for you."
